In the current Monetary System profit and the concentration of wealth is an uncompromising motive which is pursued at the expense of human well-being, efficiency, and environmental harmony. War, poverty, disease, scarcity, crime, and corruption are not accidental complications of the current system, but esxpected atrocities due to the nature of our system. Critical observation reveals that our current social and economic system is in direct conflict with our health, progress, and sustainability. We also understand that being critical of the current system without having an underlying direction and solution, is mere complaint. The Zeitgeist Movement and The Venus Project offer both critique and possible solutions, as well as being open to other possibilities to improve life.
Wow, that video was really interesting. It sheds a new prospective on the natural way of things versus the human creation of things. It is unfortunate though, because these units that humans have created as measuring devices have been around for so long, that they now seem natural; the line becomes extremely blurred. And to continue living the way that humans intend to live - with structure - it seems that these measures must stay intact. However, I do like the explanation of the Great Depression that he included in his lecture. It is ridiculous the ends that people will go to to maintain our humanistic society. That video made it clear that people work, selflessly and mindlessly, for monetary gain, because money is what buys people "stuff." But without the competitiveness and individuality that money forces upon people - that we all need to have our own wealth - we are really preventing a greater wealth amongst our species, so to speak. If you look around at the natural way of creatures, it is the species that they look out for. Yes, they aren't always nurturing of each other, but they don't destroy each other either. It is interesting because, as he pointed out, we have the resources necessary to give everyone "wealth," but it seems that people are trapped by this system to think that wealth is a piece of paper, invented by humans many, many years ago. The hard part is going to be getting people from here to there. This monetary system has been so ingrained in our culture, worldwide, that it seems the only way to change it, is to start over somewhere else with new people, unexposed to this system.
ReplyDeleteIt would be much easier to implement a system with unexposed beings but I believe there will still be the problem with emergence and progression. If this system is changed it will show the the human race as a whole, (the society) can change and evolve socially. This metaphorical bridge will still need to be crossed in order to achieve this social perspective. The next step in our evolution is not physical but social. My favorite part was part was the depression reference as well. There is a small gray area because money was developed as a medium of exchange, but never the less the point still remains. There was not a shortage of food, materials, or anything for that matter. Just a shortage of money, that is simply primitive and embarrassing.
